The Westside Development Corporation (WDC) is pleased to announce the appointment of Laura Cabanilla-Cruz as Interim President. Cabanilla-Cruz is leading the organization after the departure of Ramon “Ray” Flores, who has taken a position at Port San Antonio as Vice President of Real Estate Development. For the past six years Flores has led the WDC as Executive Director. Cabanilla-Cruz will continue her primary duties of fundraising, strategic marketing, and external affairs while assuming Flores' duties.
Prior to her new position, Cabanilla-Cruz served the organization as External Relations and Development Officer. She has played a role in growing the WDC’s capacity through her consulting company, Cruz Enterprises. Prior to starting her own business, Cabanilla-Cruz worked for the Women’s Sports Foundation and two City of San Antonio Councilmembers. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from St. Mary’s University and an MPA from the University of Texas at San Antonio.
“I am honored to have been chosen to lead the WDC during this time of transition. Ray did a tremendous job for the WDC and will be missed. I look forward to working with city staff, partner entities, and key stakeholders to carry out the strategic priorities of the organization. We will continue to focus on increasing investment in the Westside and improving the quality of life for area residents,” said Cabanilla-Cruz.
The Westside Development Corporation programs and efforts are closely aligned with the city’s SA 2020 initiative and renewed focus on the downtown core, and it will continue to work on ensuring the Westside is positioned for dynamic growth and economic revitalization. The WDC was created as a nonprofit, local government corporation whose mission is to foster local economic development opportunities, promote development and redevelopment of real estate within its target area, create viable urban communities and preserve the character, culture and history of the area. In the seven years of its existence, the WDC has evolved into a facilitator, a financial and information resource and a key partner for many potential investors, Westside businesses, and community organizations who are interested in expanding or establishing in the Westside.
